Science and society meet to address issues of citizenship, inclusion and identity
On 4 October, a new series of seminars organised by Human Hall, the first scientific hub dedicated to social and technological innovation, will kick off, addressing crucial topics such as the right to citizenship and social inclusion. The first meeting will be held in San Siro, a neighbourhood in Milan historically marked by migration and inclusion dynamics, and represents an important opportunity for academics, activists and citizens to exchange views on the issue of civil rights.
The second appointment, scheduled for 22 October, will take place at the MUSA Museum (Museo Universitario delle Scienze Antropologiche, Mediche e Forensi per i Diritti Umani – University Museum of Anthropological, Medical and Forensic Sciences for Human Rights), an innovative space created by Labanof, the Laboratory of Anthropology and Forensic Odontology of the Università Statale di Milano. During this meeting, the focus will be on the right to identity, with a focus on the role that science can play in protecting the fundamental rights of migrants, in particular in reconstructing the stories of those who lost their lives during their journeys to Europe.
The MUSA, created with the aim of highlighting the link between science and human rights, is a symbolic place to discuss these issues. The protagonist disciplines, such as anthropology and forensic medicine, study the body to reconstruct identities and stories of life and death, trying to restore dignity to those who have lost it, often in dramatic circumstances. Through its research, Labanof has helped identify the remains of numerous migrants, making it possible to recognise their identities and allowing families to find closure.
These seminars, set in a context of profound public interest, aim to raise awareness of migration and human rights issues, and to stimulate an interdisciplinary dialogue involving both the humanities and the forensic sciences, highlighting how scientific knowledge can be put at the service of social justice.
