Spoke 2 focuses on developing technologies and processes for handling large amounts of health and Life Sciences data for the well-being and health of citizens
Big Data-Open Data in Life Sciences will develop an innovative digital platform for the secure transmission and storage of big data related to life sciences, translating basic research into applications aimed at improving citizens’ nutritional status, healthcare, and the environment in which they live. It will organize and process data to make it accessible to artificial intelligence systems. Spoke 2 will have an impact on citizens’ well-being by improving their lifestyle, structuring the collection of big data for biomedical research in Lombardy, and developing the pharmaceutical and life sciences industries. These actions will also be implemented through interaction with other Spokes of the MUSA project: Spoke 1 for sustainable lifestyles, Spoke 6 for social inclusion, Spokes 3 and 5 for the industrial transfer of research results and developed solutions, as well as for technology transfer and economic impact. The scientific impact of Spoke 2 will consist of creating a digital infrastructure for the exchange of data related to life sciences and medicine, enabling advanced research in preclinical, clinical, and diagnostic fields, as well as increasing interest among all territorial stakeholders. Spoke 1, Spoke 2, and Spoke 6 are connected by the common goal of building an urban and neighborhood infrastructure that promotes a healthy and sustainable lifestyle, as well as well-being and social inclusion. In particular, Spoke 2 aims to significantly improve social sustainability, encourage social inclusion, bridge inequalities, and improve health. In addition, there are expected environmental sustainability repercussions resulting from the overall improvement in lifestyle habits. The future of healthcare sustainability, and more broadly, welfare, depends not only on the introduction of innovative technologies and service delivery methods but also on the involvement and responsibility of all stakeholders in achieving the designated goals.
In Spoke 2, we aim to create the digital structure for the exchange of data related to life sciences and medicine, starting from the 5G infrastructure that will support broadband and low-latency data transmission, ensuring the security requirements that must accompany the transmission of medical and life sciences data. Based on the 5G infrastructure and existing infrastructure, we will further develop the telemedicine platform of the University of Milan, already operational in important Lombardy ASSTs. We will test the potential of the platform in innovative clinical trials on remote diagnostics and remote monitoring, also in partnership with major pharmaceutical companies such as Novartis and AstraZeneca. All collected data will be enriched and interpreted through artificial intelligence systems to support clinical decisions for current and future patients.
In Spoke 2, we will also develop new technologies and personalized tools for continuous remote monitoring, for the promotion of well-being and health, increasing awareness among the population regarding important health issues. This action will also involve preschools in teaching management and learning disability prevention.
In Spoke 2, we will support the development of high-impact technological startups, encouraging the implementation of technologies produced by research in the territory, and analyze the overall economic impact of a structured collection of big data related to life sciences.
