Thanks to the PNRR and the MUSA programme, a population study aimed at improving awareness and prevention of cardiovascular diseases starts in Bicocca
The University of Milan-Bicocca has launched the BEA (Bicocca Epidemlogical Assetment) research project aimed at improving cardiovascular disease prevention in the Bicocca district. This initiative offers a group of citizens the unique opportunity to undergo free comprehensive cardiovascular screening, with the aim of early detection of risk factors through advanced methods and a multidisciplinary approach. The project aims to improve early diagnosis, increase citizens’ awareness of risks and, in the long term, contribute to the reduction of the incidence of cardiovascular diseases in the community.
Underlying the project is a collaboration between several departments of the University of Milan-Bicocca: the Department of Medicine and Surgery, the Department of Psychology and the Department of Materials Science. This integration of expertise makes it possible to approach cardiovascular prevention from different perspectives, combining medicine, psychological sciences and materials innovation to offer a highly personalised and comprehensive screening pathway.
Although cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in Italy, risk awareness among the population remains low. Many of the risk factors are often underestimated or inadequately researched, and there is a lack of an effective interdisciplinary approach to address these issues in a comprehensive manner. Moreover, the direct involvement of citizens in prevention activities is still low and inadequate lifestyles contribute to worsen the picture. The project initiated by Bicocca responds to these shortcomings, putting the citizen at the centre and aiming to promote healthier lifestyles through screening and prevention.
The citizens involved will benefit from a comprehensive cardiovascular assessment, consisting of a series of fundamental examinations. Anamnestic and anthropometric data will be collected to analyse medical history and measure physical characteristics that may influence cardiovascular health. In addition, an objective examination will be conducted along with vital signs and an electrocardiogram (ECG) to monitor heart health. The programme also includes 24-hour blood pressure monitoring, accompanied by laboratory tests to assess cholesterol levels, blood glucose and other parameters essential for the diagnosis of cardiovascular risks.
This project is part of the broader framework of preventive healthcare, aimed at promoting a more informed and caring society, in which cardiovascular risk can be addressed through information and prevention.
