Preliminary results of the citizen science project on urban fauna monitoring in Milan involving students and citizens presented
The preliminary results of the ‘GuardaMi’ project were presented, the event took place during Milano Green Week at the Museum of Natural History in Milan last week. This ambitious participatory science project, led by Professors Marina Nova and Massimiliano Deaddis of the Liceo Artistico di Brera, aims to map and monitor the city’s urban fauna, with a special focus on birds. During the event, the high school students presented the results of the ornithological observations conducted, in preparation for the publication of the first atlas dedicated to birds nesting in Milan.
The conference, coordinated by Professor Mattia Brambilla, Spoke 1 of the MUSA project, an expert in urban biodiversity and lecturer at the State University of Milan, saw the active participation of citizens, students and researchers. Initial findings were presented, highlighting the importance of comparing local data with those collected at a European level, in order to better understand the impact of environmental changes on the urban ecosystem and support sustainable spatial planning.
In addition to presenting current data, the meeting stimulated reflection on possible future developments of the project and changes that could affect urban biodiversity. The value of raising community awareness of the importance of protecting natural habitats even in heavily urbanised contexts was emphasised.
