From the "Next Generation SME" Call for Proposals: A model combining coworking, technology, and the fight against depopulation in inland areas.
The regeneration of territories depends on workspaces and the ability to turn them into engines of innovation and opportunity. This is the vision guiding Limes Mundi, an Innovation Hub dedicated to creating high-tech shared workspaces. At the heart of this mission is the Limes Pharm project, supported by the MUSA Next Generation SME Call. Marco Prandini, Project Manager at Limes Mundi, explains the birth and evolution of an initiative capable of blending urban recovery, innovation, and local development.
“We are an Innovation Hub; we create shared workspaces with a very innovative vision,” explains Prandini. The core of the project is the regeneration of existing buildings—often owned by municipalities or managed by public administrations and associations—which are reclaimed and transformed into coworking spaces. These spaces are brought back to life, becoming local landmarks through the integration of physical infrastructure and digital technologies for environment management.
These sites are not merely shared offices, but true ecosystems of collaboration. “We offer new opportunities to local youth, who can find a workspace without having to set up new offices or bear high costs,” Prandini emphasizes. Inside these hubs, professional relationships flourish, diverse skills intersect, and new entrepreneurial ideas are born. In this way, the coworking spaces become informal incubators for startups, new businesses, and high-impact local initiatives.
Limes Mundi originated in Val Camonica, where the first hub was inaugurated in Cividate Camuno. This experience immediately demonstrated the potential of the model, which is replicable in many other contexts. “We have seen that numerous territories could benefit from our reality,” says Prandini, particularly in border regions and areas most at risk of depopulation.
The support from the Next Generation SME Call represents a strategic milestone for the project’s growth. “Thanks to this award, we will begin—or rather, continue—our expansion.” The goal is to bring the Limes Mundi model to new territories where the need for innovation meets the necessity of reclaiming unused buildings and restoring a sense of central importance to local communities.
