From energy research to healthcare innovation, through the transformative role of universities and the strategic importance of sustainable finance: the second day of the international workshop promoted by MUSA – Multilayered Urban Sustainability Action – took place on Saturday, May 31, inside the Italy Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, featuring a rich program of talks and perspectives focused on the city of the future.

A Sustainability Lab with an Academic Core

The session opened with the panel Urban Regeneration and Sustainability, curated by the University of Milano-Bicocca. Matteo Colleoni, Delegate for Sustainability and Mobility, led the contributions from Maurizio Acciarri and Emily Rose Palm, alongside international experts such as Tohma Sogabe (University of Electro-Communications, Tokyo) and private sector representatives like Edoardo Dellarole (ROAD-ENI) and Koji Takagi (Bridgestone).

The presentations explored new solutions for urban regeneration, where environmental sustainability intersects with materials research, energy efficiency, and technologies for urban mobility.

Wellbeing and Health in Smart Cities

Next, the University of Milan hosted the panel Innovative Healthcare, Wellbeing and Urban Quality of Life, featuring contributions from Marta Marsilio and Marco Boffi, joined by Setsuo Tsuruta (Tokyo Denki University), Lei Liu (AstraZeneca), and Gabriele Elia (TIM). The focus was on the potential of digital technologies to enhance urban quality of life, with particular attention to public health, environmental monitoring, and new models of care.

Universities as Catalysts for Change

The Polytechnic University of Milan then led the panel Universities as Drivers for City Transformation, with talks by Emilio Faroldi and Maddalena Buffoli, alongside Japanese colleagues Yosuke Komiyama (Kyoto University) and Ueno Takashi (3L-Ricoh). Here, the university emerges not only as a place of education and research, but as a key player in neighborhood transformation and multi-level urban governance.

Sustainable Finance and Economic Impact

The day concluded with a session on Economic Impact and Sustainable Finance, organized by Bocconi University. Andrea Beltratti and Gianluca Manca discussed green finance scenarios in dialogue with the business world, with online contributions from Chiara Locati and Davide Rovelli (De Nora), and Tamara Viel (De Longhi).
