A new chapter in circular fashion through collaboration between universities, public and private entities to reduce environmental impact and promote sustainable practices in the denim industry
Candiani, with the scientific support of the MUSA project, carried out a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study to analyse the environmental impact of its new product, Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) Denim. This collaboration reflects MUSA’s commitment to promoting environmental, economic and social sustainability through synergy between universities, public and private entities.
Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) refers to materials that are recycled after their use by the end consumer. In the textile industry, this process recycles items such as clothes and household products. The European Union reported that 6.95 million tonnes of textile waste were generated in 2020, with only 4.4 kg per person going for reuse or recycling. Candiani’s PCR programme seeks to address this emergency by reducing the amount of textile waste incinerated or taken to landfill.
Candiani’s PCR programme is unique in several respects. The proximity of the production chain – with cotton processing and denim production within a radius of only 60 km – reduces the environmental impact related to logistics. Every step, from the harvesting of the regenerative Blue Seed cotton to the production of denim, is fully traceable, ensuring transparency and accountability along the entire supply chain. Furthermore, the programme is based on circularity, transforming textile waste into high-quality denim fabrics. The regenerative Blue Seed cotton, used for production, guarantees strength, durability and superior softness.
The supply chain of the PCR programme comprises several crucial steps. The cultivation of the Blue Seed regenerative cotton takes place in Spain, at ALGOSUR in Seville, while the collection and pre-processing of the old jeans is carried out by HUMANA People to People Italia, in Pregnana Milanese. In Vigliano Biellese, FILATURA ASTRO transforms the collected jeans into new recycled yarns, which are then converted into denim fabrics by Candiani Denim, in Robecchetto con Induno.
Blue Seed cotton, a non-GMO hybrid grown using regenerative farming techniques in Andalusia, is at the heart of this process. Its superior strength compared to conventional cotton allows the integration of up to 30% recycled cotton in PCR fabrics. The regenagri® Content Standard certification guarantees that the entire production is based on sustainable practices.
The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study conducted by Candiani measured the environmental impact of PCR Denim by comparing it with conventional denim. The analysis evaluated various indicators, such as consequences for human health, ecosystems and natural resources. The results show a significant reduction of environmental impacts in the production process of PCR Denim compared to conventional methods.
