A system that integrates nature and technology to improve indoor air quality, reduce energy consumption, and rethink the role of greenery in urban and workplace environments.
Bringing nature into urban spaces is not just an aesthetic choice, but a concrete strategy to rethink how we design and experience indoor environments. It is from this vision that Sphere was born, the project by Pietro Carloni, winner of the MUSA Next Generation PMI call and awarded on December 4 during the event “MUSA – The Pathways of Sustainable Innovation.”
Sphere develops what are defined as breathing green walls: systems that, while appearing as living vertical gardens composed of real plants, integrate technology capable of purifying and cooling the air. Through a ventilation system positioned behind the walls, air is forced to pass through plants and soil, creating a natural biofilter that helps improve indoor air quality.
The distinctive element of the project lies precisely in the integration of nature and technology. Plants do not serve as a decorative function; they become an active part of a low-energy system designed to reduce the use of air conditioning and increase environmental comfort. This approach provides a concrete response to challenges related to sustainability, energy efficiency, and well-being in workplaces and urban areas.
The underlying idea is clear: to bring nature back into cities and enhance its potential as green infrastructure capable of generating environmental and social benefits. In a context where air quality represents one of the main urban critical issues, solutions like Sphere demonstrate how innovation can translate into tangible and scalable applications for SMEs and the market.
The recognition within the MUSA Next Generation PMI call confirms MUSA’s role in promoting high-potential entrepreneurial projects capable of combining research, technology transfer, and sustainability. Through initiatives like this, MUSA continues to support innovative pathways that generate concrete impact on the territory, guiding companies toward more responsible and competitive development models.
